Border Health Elective
The Border Health Elective offers UC San Diego residents a unique opportunity to explore border health given the program's proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. Residents will gain firsthand exposure to how medicine is practiced in resource-limited settings and the distinct health issues affecting patients along the border. Residents will care for patients at a range of sites, from a specialty hospital (Cruz Roja) to small nonprofit clinics (Prevencasa, Health Frontiers in Tijuana, International Health Collective, and the Wound Clinic), gaining a broad view of cross-border healthcare delivery.
Mozambique Elective
UC San Diego Internal Medicine Residency Program offers second- and third-year categorical residents interested in Global Medicine the opportunity to engage in clinical activities for 4 weeks at a UC San Diego-affiliated medical center in Maputo, Mozambique.
Shiprock Elective
The Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC) is an Indian Health Service hospital in Shiprock, NM with 55 inpatient beds, a small ICU and attached outpatient clinics providing care for approximately 53,000 Native Americans in the northern part of the Navajo reservation. The Navajo Nation, home of the Diné people, is the largest reservation in the United States and extends into the states of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.
This rotation at NNMC is a unique opportunity for residents to practice full spectrum internal medicine, including primary care, urgent care, inpatient and ICU medicine. UC San Diego residents work 1-1 with attendings in general medicine clinics and admit and take care of patients on the general medicine floor and in the ICU.
