Applicants can apply for any of these 3 training tracks:
Categorical Medicine Track

Program Overview:
- 3-year "traditional" training track leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine
- Prepares residents for careers in academic and private-practice general internal medicine as well as for subspecialization
- Curriculum of inpatient and outpatient rotations providing broad exposure to general internal medicine as well as subspecialties
- Optional 2-month research elective for scholarly activities

Physician-Scientist Training Pathway (PSTP)

Program Overview:
The Two-Year Fast-Track is available to all fellowship programs, with the exception of cardiology. For cardiology, PSTP applicants are required to participate in the Three-Year Research-in-Residency program. Here's a brief summary of similarities and differences between the two programs:
- The Two-Year Fast-Track is a traditional ABIM fast-track program
- Two years of intensive clinical training in the internal medicine residency program with no research months during residency
- Guaranteed acceptance to the research fellowship selected during the interview (~50% of fellowship time is protected research with the exception of continuity clinics), upon satisfactory completion of the internal medicine residency program
- Two-years protected research after fellowship
- Eligibility for boards as dictated by ABIM
- Cardiology does not participate in the two-year fast-track

- The Three-Year Research-in-Residency program allows more comprehensive clinical training in internal medicine and earlier exposure to research, which is the same as the categorical match)
- Three years of clinical training in the internal medicine residency program with 4 monthsprotected research during residency
- Bioinformatics training and research mentorship during residency with goal of helping matriculant publish during residency
- Guaranteed acceptance to the research fellowship selected during the interview (~50% of fellowship time is protected research with the exception of continuity clinics), upon satisfactory completion of the internal medicine residency program
- At least one year of protected research after fellowship
- Eligibility for boards as with their matriculating residency and fellowship class

Primary Care Track

Program Overview:
- 3-year primary care training track with additional exposure to ambulatory general internal medicine clinics, didactics, and skills, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
- Prepares residents for a wide variety of careers in ambulatory general internal medicine and primary care subspecialty areas
- Three annual primary care blocks providing exposure to a wide-range of primary care environments, high-yield subspecialty clinic sessions, primary care skills trainings, personalized to individual resident career goals.
- Weekly didactic curriculum during primary care blocks focusing on clinical and non-clinical topics as well as a dedicated social justice curriculum including hands-on experience with community agencies

Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency

Program Overview: The Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Residency is a 4-year residency training program with 24 months each of internal medicine and pediatric rotations, designed to provide comprehensive training in both internal medicine and pediatrics for residents. There are 4 clinical training sites: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center, VA San Diego Healthcare System, and Rady Children's Hospital of San Diego
