UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center

THE UCSD MEDICAL CENTER in Hillcrest is a 390 bed facility that serves a diverse population ranging from indigents to referrals from around the world. The majority of admissions arise from the busy Emergency Department as well as from various community and hospital based clinics. The Medical Center also serves as a tertiary referral center providing a multitude of specialized services including cardiopulmonary, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplantation programs. UCSD also has an internationally recognized interventional pulmonary service. At UCSD we also provide innovative interventional and electrophysiology cardiology service, one of the preeminent AIDS treatment units, and a host of other specialized services. Residents benefit from this rich patient base as they learn how to evaluate and manage a wide range of clinical problems.

VA San Diego Medical Center

VETERANS AFFAIRS SAN DIEGO HEALTHCARE CENTER (aka V.A. Medical Center) is a 355 bed facility located in La Jolla adjacent to the medical school campus. The VA Medical Center offers excellent experience in the management of internal medicine problems of the veteran population and a particularly active combined coronary care and medical intensive care unit. The medical staff at the VA Medical Center are full time medical faculty of the UCSD School of Medicine and are equally committed to providing an intense and enjoyable learning environment. All aspects of the VA Medical Center educational program are integrated fully with that of the UCSD Medical Center.

UCSD Thornton Hospital

THE JOHN M. AND SALLY B. THORNTON HOSPITAL of UCSD Medical Center is a 120 bed facility which opened in July 1993. Patients admitted to the Thornton Hospital are cared for by residents and faculty Hospitalist physicians. Thornton hosts the preeminent Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy program in the country. The hospital also houses the bone marrow transplant service and is next door to the Moore's Cancer Center affording housestaff numerous opportunities to learn in these venues. On inpatient rotations residents and interns work together with paired hospitalist and oncology attendings to care for medicine and cancer patients.

Scripps Mercy Hospital

SCRIPPS MERCY HOSPITAL is a private 416 bed facility. Patients admitted to Scripps Mercy Hospital are drawn largely from local private practices, although they, like UCSD, serve the local indigent population as well. Scripps Mercy hospital has a separate internal medicine residency program which maintains an affiliation with UCSD Medical Center. One UCSD resident per month rotates through the Scripps Mercy ward service. This experience provides added exposure to the private hospital setting and allows an opportunity for residents to interact with physicians currently in private practice.
