Housestaff Social Events
We feel that housestaff camaraderie and morale are important in creating a friendly and effective working environment. The Department of Medicine, San Diego Housestaff Association, and Chief Residents sponsor activities and outings that reflect this commitment.
Department of Medicine Activities
Intern Welcome Reception At the beginning of each year is a welcome reception for the incoming intern class, traditionally held at Karl Strauss Brewery and Restaurant in Sorrento Valley. It is a fun evening for the interns to get to meet all the housestaff and program leadership in an informal setting before the big day.
Big Sib Outings Each intern is assigned an upper level resident, who is responsible for organizing a dinner or outing 2 times per year. These have included Padres games, dinners at local restaurants, and night's out on the town.
Annual Holiday PartyEvery year in December, the hospital is covered by non-internal medicine residents (attendings and fellows), so that all of the residents and interns can participate in the holiday party, which has been held at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla for the past several years.
Happy Hours Throughout the year the department sponsors a get-together designed to bring the residents and interns together who have been working at the three separated hospitals.
Annual Program Retreat Returning residents meet at the end of the academic year, by the bay and discuss the curriculum and improvements for the upcoming year. This is attended by all house staff.
Intern Party The end of the intern year is rounded out by the intern party which is usually held at a local restaurant just prior to the end of the year.
Graduation Dinner Every June our graduating class is honored at a special dinner. After the formalities, the interns and junior residents are invited to eat, dance and party-it-up with the graduates.
San Diego House Staff Association Activities
Happy Hours Members from the surgical specialties, radiology, pathology, and psychiatry get together to swap stories, and foster camaraderie interdepartmental working relationships.
Annual Housestaff Picnic All housestaff attend an afternoon barbeque-by-the-bay, typically in the springtime during which time they are covered by the attendings and fellows.
Chief Medicine Resident Activities
IM Softball League UCSD's finest physicians compete in two co-ed softball leagues. The teams include members of the Department of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and subspecialty fellows.
Switch Day Rounds Every intern switch day (4 weeks) we meet in different areas of the city, to reflect on the previous four weeks, and reunite with old friends.
