Salary & Stipends

The current 2008 salary scale is as follows:

  • First postgraduate year: $45,659
  • Second postgraduate year: $47,211
  • Third postgraduate year: $49,095
  • Fourth postgraduate year: $50,987

In addition to the regular salary for residents and interns, the University of California San Diego also provides an educational stipend of $500 per year, a housing allowance of $1,500 per year, and a licensing allowance of $600 per year.

Leave Policy

Resident physicians are entitled to four (4) weeks of paid vacation each year. Vacations are scheduled in advance with the chief residents, and are scheduled in two 2-week blocks. Additional leave for illness, family medical emergencies, or maternity/paternity may be taken according to written policy in the UCSD Internal Medicine House Staff Manual. Approval of unscheduled leave must be obtained from the Program Director.

Insurance Coverage

Group health insurance and disability plans are available to resident physicians and their dependents, as well as dental and vision coverage, provided as an employment benefit with NO COST to the resident or his/her dependents.

There is a $40,000 life insurance plan for the resident physician, which includes a double indemnity clause of $80,000, and is provided by the University at no cost to the resident. Malpractice insurance is also provided by the University.

On-call Meals & Uniforms

Other benefits at the VA and UCSD medical centers include a food allowance to cover on-call eating expenses, free lab coats and laundry services.

Library Resources

Residents have access to the library resources of UCSD and the San Diego VA. UCSD library access is available offsite via the internet.

Parking

At UCSD Medical Center there is a 50% reduction in the cost of parking for resident physicians. At the VA Medical Center, parking is free.

Campus Facilities

Residents also have access to recreational facilities available to students of the main UCSD campus including the large indoor and outdoor swimming pools and the SDSU/UCSD Mission Bay Aquatics Center.
